What order should you watch the Marvel movies and shows (MCU) in 2026?

July 13, 2026 · 5 min read

More than 60 movies and shows, specials, the Netflix Defenders saga… the MCU has grown so vast that the question is no longer “should I watch Marvel?” but “where do I start?”. Two schools face off: release order and story chronological order.

First watch: RELEASE order, no hesitation

If you're discovering the MCU, watch in the order the movies hit theaters (Iron Man 2008 → Avengers → etc.). That's the order the writers designed: reveals land at the right moment, post-credit scenes make sense, and the build-up to Infinity War / Endgame works as intended. In chronological order, you spoil major twists for yourself.

Rewatch: CHRONOLOGICAL order, for a different experience

Once you know the saga, replaying it in story order is fascinating: Captain America - The First Avenger (World War II), then Captain Marvel (the 90s), then Iron Man… Time jumps become a coherent timeline, and details invisible on first watch suddenly click.

The classic traps

  • The Netflix shows (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, The Punisher…) slot in between phases 2 and 3 — often missing from lists.
  • Some shows interleave BY SEASON (Daredevil S1, then S2 after other entries…): a per-show list isn't enough.
  • The specials (Werewolf by Night, the Guardians Holiday Special) have a real place in the timeline.

The interactive checklist (free)

Rather than a frozen list in an article — outdated at the next release — we maintain the full MCU universe as an interactive checklist: all 60+ entries, movies AND shows season by season, in both orders. Check off what you've seen, your progress syncs with your library, and the list updates with every new release. Star Wars and DC are available too.
