Watchdle #81

Watchdle is our Wordle-style puzzle applied to television: one mystery show a day, the same one for every player in the world, and six guesses to find it. The difficulty doesn't come from vocabulary but from visual and narrative memory — recognising a show from its year and genres, then its country and network, two episode titles, a main character, a synopsis whose title has been redacted, and finally its blurred poster. Results share as a square of emoji, without ever giving the answer away to someone who hasn't played yet.

How to play

• One mystery show a day, the same one for everyone: the puzzle changes at midnight UTC.
• Six guesses. Each miss reveals a different kind of clue, from vaguest to most telling: year and genres, country and network, two season 1 episode titles, a main character, the redacted synopsis, then the blurred poster.
• Playable without an account. With one, your win streak is kept and you appear on the Games leaderboard.

Three ways to play better

1. Don't waste the first guess. With only the year and genres, offer the most emblematic show of that crossing: if it lands you score 100 points (against 5 on the sixth guess), and if not you unlock the country, the network and the number of seasons, which already narrow the list a lot.
2. Read the black blocks in the synopsis as information: how many there are tells you the number of words in the title, and their rough length tells you its shape.
3. Season 1 episode titles betray tone more than plot. A one-word abstract title points to prestige drama; a pun points to comedy.

Where the data comes from

The 234 guessable shows are frozen in the code, picked from the best-rated on TMDB with at least 2,000 votes — without that filter, the draw kept landing on shows rated 9/10 by sixty people. The browser only ever receives a fingerprint of the answer, and the server replays your game before recording a score.
